French Creek Freddie Files for Unemployment After Federal Budget Cuts Two Days After Uplifting Prediction

French Creek, WV – French Creek Freddie, the state’s most famous groundhog and weather prognosticator, has announced that he has filed for unemployment benefits after his position was eliminated due to federal budget cuts.

Freddie, who has been predicting the arrival of spring for the past five years, said he was “shocked and disappointed” by the news.

“I’m just trying to make a living like everyone else,” Freddie said. “I have a family to support.”

Freddie’s job was cut as part of a larger effort to reduce government spending. The cuts were mandated in early 2025, a law that requires across-the-board reductions in federal spending.

“I understand that the government has to make tough choices,” Freddie said. “But I don’t think it’s fair to target groundhogs.”

Freddie’s supporters have organized a Save Freddie’s Job campaign. They are collecting signatures on a petition to urge Congress to reinstate his position.

“Freddie is an important part of our community,” said campaign organizer Sarah Smith. “He brings joy to people of all ages.”

The campaign has received support from local businesses and politicians.

“Freddie is a national treasure,” said Congressman David McKinley. “We need to do everything we can to save his job.”

Freddie said he is grateful for the support he has received.

“I’m not giving up hope,” Freddie said. “I’m going to keep fighting for my job.”

In the meantime, Freddie said he is exploring other career options.

“I’m thinking about becoming a weatherman,” Freddie said. “I have a lot of experience in that area.”
